Installing mechanical systems - Rénoclimat Program

Installing mechanical systems

Using mechanical systems that perform well can improve the energy efficiency of your home and your level of comfort. The choice of ENERGY STAR®-certified units is recommended.

Based on the type of system, the financial assistance provided under the Rénoclimat program is granted for the installation of a new unit or for the replacement of a system with a higher performance model.

Special case of multiple-unit buildings

Do you own a duplex, triplex or a multiple-unit residential building? Financial assistance is granted based on the number of units that are installed (maximum of one per unit). For more information, consult the page about amounts for multiple-unit housing.

Ventilation systems

A mechanical ventilation system serves to evacuate excess humidity and pollutants from the home and introduce clean air to replace stale air. A heat recovery ventilator can maintain quality ambient air without significantly increasing the energy bill.

Please note that if you are only installing a heat recovery ventilator without undertaking other energy efficiency work, you could fall short of improving the EnerGuide rating of your home and of becoming eligible for financial assistance under the Rénoclimat program. Please talk about it with your Rénoclimat advisor.

Heating systems

If you want to replace or upgrade your heating system, ask your advisor Rénoclimat.

The replacement of a heating system is not subject to financial assistance in the current Rénoclimat program, with the exception of the installation of a heat pump or a geothermal system.

Central electronic thermostats

Since electronic thermostats are more accurate than mechanical thermostats, they offer more comfort because they maintain the temperature of your home stable and can also help you save energy.

Type of systemFinancial assistanceConditions
Central electronic thermostat$50
  • Installation of a central programmable thermostat.
  • Only applies to systems that are mainly heated by fuel oil.
It is important to check all the required conditions by consulting the Rénoclimat normative framework (PDF, in French only).

Geothermal systems

Geothermal systems use the soil or ground water as a source to heat the home during the winter and to evacuate heat during the summer.

Type of systemFinancial assistanceConditions
Geothermal systemFrom $2,115 to $5,365
  • Replacement or installation of a complete geothermal system
  • The amount varies based on whether the main heating system uses electricity or fuel oil
It is important to check all the required conditions by consulting page 14 of the Rénoclimat normative framework (PDF, in French only).

Heat pumps

Heat pumps can be used as a heating system and as an air conditioner. In the winter, a heat pump uses less energy than other heating devices to produce heat. However, below certain temperatures, another heating system replaces it because the heap pump alone will not be sufficient.

Type of systemFinancial assistanceConditions
Air-source heat pump$650
  • Installation of an air-source heat pump to heat and cool.
  • The system must be ENERGY STAR-certified®.
