Installing mechanical systems - Rénoclimat Program

Installing mechanical systems

Based on the type of system, the financial assistance provided under the Rénoclimat program is granted for the installation of a new unit or for the replacement of a system with a higher performance model. The systems must meet the standards or be certified as shown below.

Do you own a duplex, triplex or a multiple-unit residential building? Financial assistance is granted based on the number of units that are installed (maximum of one per unit). For more information, consult the page about amounts for multiple-unit housing.

Ventilation systems

A mechanical ventilation system serves to evacuate excess humidity and pollutants from the home and introduce clean air to replace stale air. A heat recovery ventilator can maintain quality ambient air without significantly increasing the energy bill.

Please note that if you are only installing a heat recovery ventilator without undertaking other energy efficiency work, you could fall short of becoming eligible for financial assistance under the Rénoclimat program. Please talk about it with your Rénoclimat advisor.

Type of systemFinancial assistanceConditions
Heat recovey ventilator (HRV)
$490
  • Valid for an installation or replacement.
  • Must recover heat and must be listed in section 3 of the directory of products certified by the Home Ventilating Institute.
It is important to check all the required conditions by consulting the Rénoclimat normative framework (in French only) in Schedule 2, Part B, section 7.

Before undertaking your renovations, you can consult the section on Helpful advice to learn more about ventilation.

Water heating systems

Water heater fuelled by oil or propane

For replacement of a water heater fuelled by oil or propane with a system fuelled by electricity or another source of renewable energy, consult the Chauffez vert program.

Drain water heat recovery systems

A drain water heat recovery system offers a simple and maintenance free way to recover some of the heat from your shower water that is carried to the drain. Such systems can save up to 40% of your water heating costs.

Type of systemFinancial assistanceConditions
Drain water heat recovery unitFrom $80 to $165
  • Valid for new installations only.

Heating systems

If you want to replace or upgrade your heating system, ask your advisor Rénoclimat.

The replacement of a heating system is not subject to financial assistance in the current Rénoclimat program, with the exception of the installation of a heat pump or a geothermal system.

Geothermal system

Geothermal systems use the soil or ground water as a source to heat the home during the winter and to evacuate heat during the summer.

Type of systemFinancial assistanceConditions
Geothermal system$5,365
  • Installation of a complete geothermal system
  • The system must be certified by the Canadian Geothermal Coalition (CGC).*
$2,115
  • Replacement of a heat pump with an existing geothermal system.
  • The existing system must be certified by the Canadian Geothermal Coalition (CGC).*
* It is important to check all the required conditions by consulting page 14 of the Rénoclimat normative framework (in French only) in Schedule 2, Part B, section 8.

Heat pumps can be used as a heating system and as an air conditioner. In the winter, a heat pump uses less energy than other heating devices to produce heat. However, below certain temperatures, another heating system replaces it because the heap pump alone will not be sufficient.

Type of systemFinancial assistanceConditions
Air-source heat pump$650
  • Installation or complete replacement of an air-source heat pump for heating and air-conditioning.
  • The system must have an ENERGY STAR® certification.
  • The system may be a ductless central mini-split heat pump, a single-package heat pump or a mini-split heat pump.
  • Attention: Other power and installation requirements may apply.
*It is important to check all the required conditions by consulting the Rénoclimat normative framework (in French only) in Schedule 2, Part B, section 8.

Before undertaking your renovations, you can consult the section on Helpful advice to learn more about heat pumps.

Special case of homes heated with oil

Installation of a thermostat

For participants who registered for the Rénoclimat program before March 31, 2018, installation of a central programmable thermostat for an oil-based principal heating system qualified for financial assistance of $50. Please contact your Rénoclimat advisor if this applies to you.

Conversion work

Financial assistance may be available from the Chauffez vert program to remove an oil or propane heating system and replace it with a system powered by electricity or another form of renewable energy. The financial assistance may be in addition to the Rénoclimat assistance for installation of a geothermal system or air-source heat pump.
