Éconologis: A simple, free service to improve the comfort of low-income families

The Ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles (MERN) has announced the return of its Éconologis Program. Available from October to March, the Program provides real assistance free of charge to low-income families, regardless of whether they are homeowners or tenants, to help them improve their energy efficiency and home comfort level. To qualify, a household must be responsible for paying its heating costs and meet several other criteria, in particular concerning its reported income in 2015.

Thanks to Econologis, which was first introduced in 1999, more than 108,000 households in Québec have been able to obtain free energy efficiency services. The Program has two separate components. Eligible households are visited by an advisor and are given practical advice on heating and the use of hot water, household appliances and lighting. The advisor also makes other suggestions, such as caulking windows, installing door sills and weatherstrips, insulating electrical outlets on perimetral walls, installing low-flow showerheads, adjusting the water heater temperature or adding aerators to water taps. Once these minor upgrades have been completed, it may be possible, on certain conditions, for a professional to install electronic thermostats in the home, free of charge.

Once again this year, the MERN is able to count on five service providers to deliver the Program throughout Québec’s regions.

For information on Program eligibility criteria and your region’s service provider, please contact the MERN at 1 866 266-0008 or visit or and click on My Home. The websites also give practical advice on how to prepare your home for winter.
